Notes from Paris: Comfort Zones are Underrated
A few years ago one of my clients used the term “comfort tasks” to describe the easy work she does when she wants to feel like she’s getting things done but is in fact avoiding the harder work!
This week’s flashback post is the one I wrote shortly afterwards, and I’m not ashamed to say I have run with that term and now use it often!
I have had a cold and lost my voice for a few days this week. I’m sure there’s a metaphor that would connect to leadership somewhere in there - probably one that’s none too flattering ... Instead, here’s a picture of me looking tired early in the morning after catching an overnight train to Toulouse.
From now until I return from sabbatical on the 7th April, I wanted to continue sharing the ideas that clients most often return to - the ones that spark reflection, shift perspective, and help make work a little more human.
Comfort Zones are Underrated
Your comfort zone often gets a bad rap, but it’s where the magic of consolidation happens.
When we’re constantly pushing boundaries, we can miss the opportunity to solidify what we’ve learned, hone our skills, and build confidence. Your comfort zone is where you reflect, refine, and anchor new ideas into practice. It’s where you have a well earned REST.
Think of it like a muscle: growth requires both the stretch and the recovery.
Until next week, au revoir
Madeleine
