Your people have choices. Will they choose you?

How do you feel when you’re not trusted to do the right thing?

Some guesses:

  • Resentful

  • Disengaged

  • Demotivated

  • Unhappy

How fully do you trust your team? I am still hearing about many leaders who think that having people back in the office is the only way to “get the most out of them”. How might their teams be feeling? Perhaps resentful, disengaged, demotivated and unhappy?

There’s little doubt that a lack of trust is a factor in the “great resignation” that’s been happening since this pandemic began.

Since mid-2020, I’ve had a sizeable increase in the number of people coming to me for coaching independently (rather than sponsored by their employer). For a large number of those clients, this is because they are reckoning with how to live life in alignment with their priorities and values and they no longer see their employer as playing a role in that exploration.

For leaders who still treat their people as fungible performers of tasks, regardless of what the posters in the now-deserted lobby say about care and compassion, this should be a wake-up call.

Your people have choices. Will they choose you?
