What my brain needs each working week

After a couple of weeks where my bumped-about brain was not at its best, I’ve been thinking about what I need for an optimal working week. I pulled it together into this diagram:

Connection with people. Protected time for deeply focused work. Time alone. Set time for clearing routine tasks. Time for creativity and daydreaming. Regular short pauses to reset.

What’s missing?

Yep – EMAIL and MEETINGS.

Both emails and meetings do feature in my working week, of course, but they are not the main game and it’s important to remember they are there to serve us, not the other way round.

So many of my clients are struggling with how to allocate their precious working hours. Often, 30 or more hours are taken up by meetings! If all those meetings were incredibly impactful, fulfilling and productive then fine – but I have an inkling that might not be the case.

If we need autonomy, mastery and purpose to feel motivated and fulfilled at work, a week full of feeling stuck in pointless meetings and racing to play catch-up with your inbox is unlikely to get you there.

Take a few moments to identify six things your brain needs each working week. How can you take back control of your time so that you can achieve that?

Until next week,

Take care of yourself and others

Madeleine
