Dial down for summer

Well, we’ve made it – the working year is pretty much done for most of us. For those of us in the southern hemisphere, summer is upon us. We’ll be closing after today – re-opening on 8 January but I’m enjoying an extended break, back on 1 February. Lucky me!

Pretty much every single client and friend I’ve been talking with lately is tired. 2023 has been a challenging year for many, myself included.

The festive season isn't just about celebration; it's an opportunity to dial down, reflect, and prepare for the year ahead. Here are five ways to make the most of your summer break…

1. Unplug and Reconnect

In our hyper-connected world, stepping away from digital devices is not just refreshing; it's necessary. Use this time to disconnect from your work emails and social media. This doesn't mean you have to go completely off-grid, but setting boundaries can help you reconnect with yourself and your loved ones. Spend time outdoors, enjoy the summer, do all those things you love that somehow get relegated during the busyness of the year.

2. Reflect and Set Intentions

Take a moment to reflect on the past year. What were your successes and “learning experiences”?

When you feel ready (for me, this is often a week or so after the Christmas/new year hullabaloo), sit quietly and set some intentions for the coming year. These don’t have to be rigid resolutions but rather guiding principles that will help you navigate both personal and professional landscapes with more clarity and purpose.

3. Enjoy some Curiosity

Leaders are learners, and what better time to indulge in this than during a break? Pick up that book you've been meaning to read, listen to podcasts, or even enrol in a short online course. This certainly doesn't have to be related to your professional field; sometimes, the most profound insights come from dabbling in entirely unrelated areas.

4. Be Nice to Yourself

Prioritise your physical and mental health. Do things that nourish your body and mind, like sleeeeeep, eating delicious nourishing food, meditation, or a simple daily walk. Remember, a healthy leader is more effective, empathetic, and equipped to handle the rigours of professional life.

5. Plan for Reintegration

As the break comes to an end, plan for a smooth transition back into the world of work. Consider a “soft start”, clearing the inbox of clutter and getting your physical work environment ready.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate, and for all of us, may this time be filled with happiness, health, and precious moments with loved ones. Season's Greetings and a Happy New Year!

Until next week,

Take care of yourself and others,

Madeleine
