Alone in the tundra? Here’s your compass

Last week I wrote about using Compass Questions to help you navigate the year ahead.

This week, let’s go beyond just this year. Imagine you're embarking on an expedition, not across icy tundras or through dense forests*, but through the vast, sometimes bewildering landscape of your own life and career.

Think of your compass questions as your personal navigation system, helping you to ensure you’re heading towards your “true north”.

Figuring out your true north is a bit like trying to tune into a radio station while on a road trip. There's a bit of static, some stations come in clearer than others, and every so often, you hit that sweet spot where everything comes in loud and clear. Your compass questions are there to help cut through the static, asking you to consider not just the job title you want, but the impact and fulfillment you seek.

For me, my core compass question is “Is this good for my soul?”

I don’t mean that in connection with any particular spiritual framework (although you might), but it’s that deep sense I get that something I’m doing or considering …

  • Is good for me

  • Lights me up

  • Makes me feel like I’m fully alive,

Or conversely …

  • Makes me feel sick (or makes me actually sick)

  • Gives me a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach

  • Has me bracing myself for hurt or damage

By tuning into those signals, and taking them seriously, decision making gets so much easier.

To be clear, this certainly doesn’t mean I only ever spend my days lit up with joy and passion. Right now I’m on a delayed train, hungry and tired. A compass won’t insulate you from tough terrain – but it will help you navigate it more readily.

So, arm yourself with your own powerful compass questions as you travel toward your true north. You might find the answers lead you to unexpected places - but that's the beauty of it, isn't it? After all, what's an adventure without a little mystery?

*I am a huge fan of the show Alone and can’t wait for the latest series of Alone Australia. Watching other people deal with icy tundras and dense forests from the comfort of my sofa is [chef’s kiss]

Until next week,

Take care of yourself and others

Madeleine
