Where Adaptability Meets Authenticity: Leading Without Losing Yourself

One of the leadership questions that comes up a lot with my clients is:

What’s the difference between being flexible and being fake?

When people are trying to lead in new environments, or take on a broader role, they want to meet the moment: to adapt, grow, respond to what’s needed. But they also want to be themselves. And when those things feel in tension, it’s hard to know what to hold and what to shift. Trying to be something you're not is also exhausting.

In coaching, I often talk with leaders about finding the overlap between authenticity and adaptability.

It’s not about forcing yourself to be someone you’re not. It’s more about expanding your range while staying anchored in what matters to you.

Sometimes it means asking:

  • What part of me is right for this context, and how can I show more of it?

  • What’s uncomfortable because it’s new vs. because it’s not aligned?

  • If I were being true to my values and reading the room well, what would I do next?

Because leadership isn’t a fixed personality trait. It’s more like a dance between who you are and what’s needed.

The sweet spot is where your real self meets the real world AND works.

How have you danced this particular one?

Until next week, take care of yourself and others
