We can do retirement better

This recent article in Harvard Business review offering tips for a smooth transition into retirement is singing from my songsheet. The author Manfred Kets de Vries (a Distinguished Professor at INSEAD) notes that the prospect of retirement can be daunting while the experience itself can be “an emotionally painful separation”.

He notes that traditionally, preparing for retirement has been all about finances, with the emotional, relational and psychological aspects left ignored.

No kidding.

He notes that some organisations, particularly professional services firms, are now beginning to “actively prime outgoing partners for life after the firm” through coaching. He says:

The retiring partners have found it easier to adjust to a new mode of living, and the firm benefits from its network of former partners who serve as ambassadors for the firm and in some cases bring in new business.

No kidding!

It’s fantastic to see this gaining traction. I’ve found the same through my work with professional services firm partners. If this is relevant to you, let’s talk.

Take care of yourself and others
