5 tips for giving feedback to your boss

Need to give some potentially unwelcome feedback to your boss? Some will welcome the direct approach, but often a little tact is more effective. Opening up a discussion, versus giving a judgement, is often a good approach.

Here are 5 tips for giving feedback to those above you (or really, anyone) …

1. Recognising their expertise makes the power holder feel respected, and paves the way for genuine understanding

Don't say:

"This idea of yours doesn't make sense."

Do say:

"You’ve seen this kind of thing before – I might be missing something about x, could you share your thinking on this one?"

2. Positioning your perspective as unique due to your role can make it more palatable and valuable to those higher up

Don't say:

"This might backfire on us."

Do say:

"It might just be what I can see from my role, but I’m worried there could be some extra implications we’ll need to consider."

3. By offering a solution rather than focusing on the problem, you’re showing leadership and a proactive approach

Don't say:

"I've heard grumblings about this from the others."

Do say:

"Some team members have shared concerns with me. Would you be open to hearing their perspectives if I facilitate a discussion?"

4. Remind them of history without being confrontational

Don't say:

"That didn’t work last time."

Do say:

"Last time, we faced challenges when we took a similar approach. Can we explore how we could address these this time around?"

5. By suggesting a bridge between higher-ups and ground level, you act as a valuable conduit, emphasising collaboration

Don't say:

"This is out of touch with the front line reality."

Do say:

"It might be beneficial to get some feedback from the front line. I can collate some insights, so we make sure we have the information we need before deciding."

Tackling power differentials requires tact, diplomacy, and most importantly, respect. Approach the conversation as a collaborator, and watch the dialogue transform.

Until next week,

Take care of yourself and others,

Madeleine
