Journey through the 6 stages of retirement

This week I wanted to share this article by financial planner Mark Cussen which I thought was a neat summary of what the author calls the six stages of retirement.

In short, they are:

  1. Pre-retirement (planning time)

  2. The big day (smiles, handshakes and farewells)

  3. Honeymoon phase (I’m free!)

  4. Disenchantment (so this is it?)

  5. Reorientation (building a new identity)

  6. Routine (moving on)

Cussen says, and I agree, that those who “have given serious time and thought to what they will do after they retire will generally experience a smoother transition than those who haven't” – making the transition less of a threat to be borne and more of a challenge to be relished.

It’s easy to focus only on the financial and holiday plans for retirement; deeper questions about who you are and what you want to achieve outside work can seem overwhelming.

But, tackling them is a powerful investment in your wellbeing through the “honeymoon” phase and into the future.

Take care of yourself and others,
